The muscarinic acetylcholine receptor M1 RNA is widely expressed across the human CNS, with additional regionally increased distribution in the salivary gland and prostate tissue. In the mouse, moderate/strong intensity cytoplasmic neuronal somatic- or somatodendritic immunostaining is noticed throughout the entire brain, in accordance with available transcriptomic data. In addition, diffuse/synaptic-type immunostaining of synaptic fields is noticed in parts of gray matter, being more predominant in the caudate putamen, caudal areas of neocortex, amygdala and the hippocampus.
